Chapter 36 The Brutality of War

Once the troops left, I realized not everybody went to the frontline. Many stayed in the campsite, conserving their energy to take over when it was their turn.
The Knight Commander named Letterman stayed behind too.
“Are you hungry, Lady Aimee?”
He, dressed in full body armor, came to ask me.
I felt my rumbling belly and smiled in embarrassment.
“Is there anything to eat?”
Letterman quickly came back with bread and milk.
I took a bite of the bread, surprised by the jam inside.
Finding it strange, I asked, “Does everybody here eat this?”
Letterman was honest. “Of course not. Even Prince Ares eats rye bread, but you’re a lady. You can’t be eating the same as us.”
After what he said, I found it hard to keep the bread down.
I pushed the untouched milk back to him. “Just give me the same as everyone else. I’m not that delicate.”
“It’s on Prince Ares’ orders.”
Letterman was stubborn.
