Chapter 6 This Woman Was His
“Where do you think you’re going?”
Myles inched closer to her. His warm breath and overwhelming testosterone invaded Annie’s senses, making her face flushed.
“Ahem… That… That… I have to leave the company since I’ve been fired…”
While there was still time, Annie had to seize the moment to submit her résumé and obtain a suitable job as soon as possible.
Seeing the tongue-tied and red-faced Annie, Myles felt for the first time that women were rather fascinating creatures.
“Who said you were fired? From today onward, you’re transferred to the Secretarial Department for work. You’ll be my personal secretary. How’s that?”
His business-like tone and constantly closing their distance rendered Annie completely senseless. The blood in her body kept flowing to her head.
In the next second, even she did not know how she managed to move nor where her strength came from. Before she knew it, she had shoved Myles away in one go, then cursed angrily.
Annie’s face was completely red. Personal… secretary? News of superiors molesting secretaries and the like flashed through her mind. The more she thought of it, the angrier she got. She stared at Myles with wide, protuberant eyes. She never thought he was just a pretty face!
“You’re not willing? Could it be… you don’t want to continue where we left off yesterday?”
A wicked smile hung on the Myles after he had been pushed aside. His long fingers brushed against Annie’s heated cheek. Seeing the woman in front of him stand strong like a feral cat, his mood was vastly improved.
He still had the aftertaste of her sickeningly-sweet flavor yesterday. Never had a woman managed to enter his field of vision and leave such an unforgettable impression.
Right now, Annie wished she could slap him again. This man was too despicable!
She did not care what company’s president he was anymore and snapped in reply, “Myles Jennings, if you want a secretary who can provide that kind of special service, I can call a lady up for you, but please don’t get any ideas about me! Also, I don’t plan to stay at Jennings Group any longer. See you never!”
No matter how much Annie could forbear normally, she had never been accused of a dalliance before, especially in front of so many people. She was so enraged and embarrassed, she just wanted to find a hole to hide in. The words she spoke were especially impolite.
After spitting out the words, Annie, who had gone completely red-faced ages ago, spun around and left. Although Jennings Group’s pay was three times higher than anywhere else, she outright refused to sell herself in exchange for this job.
Even as Annie’s figure vanished past the glass entrance, the staff still could not grasp what was happening.
Their president had been called a what?!
Heavens, their outlook on the world was about to collapse.
“Ahem, you all should get back to work. Mr. Jennings, should we get Ms. Lane to come back?”
Hugh, who was as shocked as anyone, tried to be calm and asked the question. He had been by Myles’s side for five years and had never met any woman who dared speak to him this way. Even Ms. Rowan from before…
Hugh was more shocked still when he saw that the usually stony-faced Myles Jennings was smiling lightly! Should he not be furious right now?
“No need. She’ll come back,” Myles said, not minding at all that his image had been subverted. His eyes gleamed with self-confidence.
Without knowing she had become the target of some man, Annie ran out of Jennings Headquarters and squatted by the roadside. She wrapped her arms around her legs and let tears flow down her face.
In just two short days, she had first been dumped by her boyfriend out of the blue, then her little sister had plotted for her to lose her job, and yet she still had the heavy burden of life weighing on her head, pressuring her so much that she could not catch her breath.
She turned to look at the Lane Headquarters not far from here. Tears of indignance flooded her eyes, but she held back strongly, not letting them fall.
Lane Group was a renowned business big-wig. Her father, James Lane, had built it up from scratch. After he married the second young lady of the Ziegler family, Susie Ziegler, the business took off. Susie Ziegler was the younger cousin of Annie’s mother, Sharon Ziegler.
Annie had heard her mother say once that when she had first started dating James and got pregnant before marriage, James had already proposed to Sharon. However, Annie’s great-grandfather had suddenly passed away from illness and left a will that allowed the first man who married one of the Ziegler sisters to succeed the Lane family business, but she did not think Susie would beat her to it nor that her marriage partner would be James Lane…
Annie could not bear to think anymore, afraid that her freely-flowing tears would drown her yet again.
Gritting her teeth, Annie wiped away the tears on her face. Only people with comfortable lives had the leisure to stay sad. It was enough for Annie to grieve for a short while. She could only continue moving forward.
Look, the air outside is so fresh, and the sunlight is just right. What reason did she have to be sad?
“Those sons of b*tches can f*ck off!”
Annie patted the dust off her butt, stood up, and yelled toward the sun. She had never been so sorrowful in her life, but just this once was enough!
