Chapter 10

AMY My eyes closed as the shower rained on me and all I could see was ten years ago. The destruction of my pack. I held my tiny gold necklace, it was the last gift my mother had given me. I opened my eyes while I streamlined my hair backwards. Rather than see the tiled walls, I saw Clara. But this time I couldn’t bring myself to cry any longer. No matter the weight of my tears, it wouldn’t bring her back to life. What mattered now was my present. I heaved a deep sigh and then turned the shower off. I wrapped one of the white towels around my body before stepping out. I preferred to remain wet, at least it helped cool this burning pain dwelling in me. I opened Logan’s wardrobe only to see several arrays of clothes neatly arranged. I was about to pick one of his shirts and shorts when my eyes darted to the silky black gown stowed away in the lower parts. He was the Alpha King after all, he was bound to have several ladies by his side yet it still bothered me. I took an oversized blue shirt and a black shorts before closing the wardrobe abruptly. Whoever this woman was, I was curious. As I wore the clothes, I noticed the painting on the wall above the bed. It was a lady, dressed in the same black gown I had just seen. She was blonde haired with blue eyes as clear as the ocean, her posture expressing confidence and elegance. My heart began to thump hard. Who was this woman? And why was her painting in Logan’s room? Were the questions that raided my head as I dressed. Once I was done, I returned the towel and by the time I came out of the bathroom, Logan sauntered in with a plate of Mac and cheese and a glass of orange juice in a red tray. “I told you I’m fine,” I said while he placed the tray on the bed. “And I’m not satisfied with that. You just recovered from your injuries, you need to replenish your energy.” “Log—“ “I’m not taking no for an answer.” He tapped the bed, beckoning me to sit. “Even if it means spoon feeding you.” “I’m not a child.” “Then don’t be stubborn.” He sat beside the tray and I reluctantly joined him, letting the tray be the only partition between us. To be fair, the aroma was enticing to make my stomach growl. “Look who said she doesn’t have an appetite.” He smiled and I won’t lie that I found it charming. After a bite, I glanced at the painting again. “Do you paint?” I didn’t know when the question escaped my lips but his smile slowly disappeared as he stared at the painting. “I do,” he answered. “That explains the paintings across the hallways,” I mumbled. “They’re beautiful by the way. I love them.” His smile returned. “Are you saying this to please me or are you being sincere?” “Why should I lie to you?” “Many would praise my work but I can’t help but think it’s simply because of my title as the Alpha King.” “Maybe that’s them but I, I love your paintings.” I smiled before taking another bite. He glanced at the painting again, “I stopped painting a long time ago.” “Why?” He went mute but his gaze remained glued to the painting. “Who is she?” I dared to ask. He cleared his throat. “No one special, just a friend.” That was definitely a poor lie and it worried me more. “How about you, what’s your jam?” “Video games.” His eyes lit up in excitement. “You play video games?” “Why are you surprised?” “Well, you don’t seem to pass off as a gamer, no offense.” I chuckled. “My brother plays them and since we moved around a lot, we barely had that stationary friends. So most of the time, it was just us two. He roped me in and over time I loved it.” “What’s your favorite?” “PUBG.” His smile deepened. “Wanna play tomorrow?” “I’ll be looking forward to that.” “I’m not exactly a guru at it so take it easy on me okay?” I chuckled. “Maybe, maybe not.” He chuckled too and then silence slowly creeped in. “I’ve put guards in charge of Blake and Gabriel at the hospital. They’re safe,” he said. “Thank you,” I whispered. “It’s nothing, Amy. I won’t rest till I capture those bastards that did this today,” he avowed. “If you need anything, I don’t want you to hesitate, okay?” I nodded slightly. “You wanna... join me? I don’t think I can finish this meal alone.” “I’ve already had my fill but, I can make space for the lady’s offer,” We both smiled at each other before he took a fork. “So what's going to happen now that I’m Luna?” He inhaled deeply. “A lot but I don’t worry, we’ll take things at your own pace. Right now, we should be focusing on you fitting in.” He paused to take a bite. “Tomorrow, I’ll arrange for a tour guide to help you around the Pack. Everyone is excited to meet the Luna of the Pack after all these years.” “You sound like you’ve been mateless for a very long time.” He exhaled deeply. “I’ve been mateless for more than a decade.” “What? But you look like you’re just in your early twenties.” “Twenty three but in actuality, I’m much older than that.” “How’s that possible?” I sported a quizzical look and another sighed escaped his breaths. He glanced at the painting and sadness reflected in those golden eyes. “It’s a long history I would rather not delve into tonight.” I gulped down my saliva but I was very much worried about him. I needed no one to tell me that there was deep history between whoever that lady was and him. He was hiding secrets from me, secrets I felt I deserved to know. “So I’m mated to an old man,” I joked to at least lighten the mood. He laughed. “I bet you can see the gray on my hair,” he teased and I laughed. “Oh and Oliver is hosting this celebration party for you.” “A party?” I frowned. “You hate parties?” “I don’t fare well at them.” “Well that makes the two of us,” he laughed. “But the pack finally get to have a Luna and Oliver’s love for parties knows no bounds.” “So we have no choice but to attend then,” I said and he nodded. “I’m nervous, I’m not sure I’m ready—“ “Hey,” he tapped my right hand and mg breaths hung in my throat from the sparks that spiraled across my body. “I’ll be by your side all through. We’re going to do this together, okay?” Maybe it was the mate bond but I was growing to feel comfortable around him and there was this thrill that came with his reassurance. “Okay.”
