CHAPTER 29 A NEW CITY
The screech of tires and the familiar hustle and bustle of New York City's John F. Kennedy Airport welcomed Jane to her new temporary home. As she stepped out of the terminal, she was hit with a rush of city air, dense with the scents of exhaust fumes and hot dogs from a nearby vendor.
Scanning the crowded street, Jane's eyes fell upon a polished black sedan, its chauffeur stepping out to greet her with a polite smile.
The driver opened the door to the backseat, ushering Jane inside. "Welcome to the Big Apple, miss," he said in a thick New York accent. "The missus has asked me to bring you to the family townhouse. It's on the Upper East Side, one of the nicest areas in the city, if you ask me."
Jane nodded politely, though her heart felt heavy. She couldn't help but wonder how Max was doing back home, and how she would ever find a way to be with him again.
