Chapter 46 : A Bleak Future

*Mae* Mae stood up, took her sister's hand, and guided her back to the kitchen. Henry had some feeble attempts at more sandwiches made, and Mae laughed to herself. She kissed Henry on her way to sit down and thanked him. She kept her eyes on him for a moment and beckoned him to sit with them. Henry took the open seat between the sisters as they started in on their lunch. He glanced back and forth between them as if he was waiting for one of them to snap. Mae appreciated his protective stance, but she also wished he'd calm down a bit. Mae tried to eat lightly, looking at April and silently encouraging her to do the same. April took small bites, like a bird, uncertain of the food being offered. "We need to talk to him," April stated abruptly. Her voice was confident and forceful. Mae and Henry exchanged a look. Mae knew what she wanted. She knew that her sister was right. She also knew that Henry was right; doing it now would do no good for anyone. Torn and conflict
