Chapter 7: The Bet

During the meal, Caro couldn't help but angrily stab her food with a fork, her gaze frequently shifting toward Wendy. When their eyes finally met, Wendy smirked provocatively before returning to her meal. Caro trembled with anger, gripping her fork tightly, but she couldn’t say anything. She could only vent her frustration by aggressively eating her food. … Meanwhile, Claire was taking action. He had his secretary call the school, but after a long wait, there was still no news. Finally, the secretary reported, “Miss Wendy’s grades are too poor. The school refuses to accept her.” Claire, who had been reading documents, looked up with a dark expression. “Then offer to donate more buildings,” he suggested. The secretary hesitated, looking troubled. Claire, sensing something amiss, urged, “What’s the matter? Speak up.” Taking a deep breath, the secretary quickly explained, “The principal said they don’t accept students through connections under any circumstances.” Claire’s anger flared, and he slammed his fist on the desk. “Is that so? Prepare the car. We’re going to meet this principal.” When they arrived at the principal’s office, the principal, recognizing Claire, immediately stood up to greet him nervously. “What brings you here, sir?” Without responding, Claire sat on the sofa, scrutinizing the principal. “Why won’t you accept my sister into your school?” The principal, sweating profusely, carefully wiped his brow. “It’s our school policy. We can’t make exceptions. Allowing one student in through connections would open the floodgates.” Claire, controlling his temper, nodded. “What must she do to be accepted?” The principal, eyeing Claire cautiously, suggested, “If she wants to join the third year, she needs to pass the entrance exam.” Claire agreed, rising from his seat. “Fine. If she passes the exam, you’ll accept her?” The principal, trembling, nodded. Relieved, Claire left the office. Back home, Claire went to Wendy’s room, finding her reading a book. Seeing him, Wendy put the book down and stood up. “Big brother, do you need something?” Smiling, Claire patted her head and picked up her book, *Jane Eyre*. “Didn’t expect you to enjoy this classic,” he remarked. “World literature,” Wendy replied, “its charm is endless, no matter how many times you read it.” Claire nodded. “I’ve arranged for you to attend school, but you need to pass the entrance exam first. Do you think you can handle it? It’s a tough school to get into.” Before Wendy could respond, Caro entered the room, smirking. “With her poor grades, she’ll need my tutoring.” Claire looked at Wendy, considering Caro’s offer. Wendy, smiling, confidently said, “No problem, Claire. I can pass the entrance exam.” Turning to Caro, she added, “Thanks for the offer, but I’ll manage on my own.” Claire, satisfied, patted Wendy’s shoulder. “If you need help, let me know. I’ll hire some tutors.” He then left the room. Caro, still at the door, sneered. “Give up, Wendy. The school’s exams are tough. You’ll never pass.” Wendy, unfazed, smiled. “Caro, how about a bet? If I pass, you have to stand at the gate and shout for an hour that you’re a failure.” Caro, laughing, agreed. “Deal. But if you lose, don’t back out.” Wendy, grinning, held up a recording device. “Got it all on tape. No backing out.” Caro, stunned, quickly regained her composure. Confident she would win, she left. Wendy, ready to prove herself, gathered information on the school’s past exams. Finding the questions simple, she shut her laptop, feeling assured. After all, in her original world, she was a top student with numerous awards.
