Chapter 6
It was late at night when Evelyn got home. When she arrived, she saw Cameron standing at the door. His expression was grim, and he looked like he was waiting for her.
She approached to ask him what was up when he said, "Can you stop picking on Jocelyn? If you don't like her, you can be frank. Why do you keep bullying her at the dance troupe?"
Evelyn was already tired, to begin with. At his words, a barrage of emotions washed over her. She felt aggrieved, upset, and helpless. It went without saying that Jocelyn had weaved a web of lies about her to him. Instead of explaining, she sidestepped him and returned to her room.
From that day on, she became lax when teaching Jocelyn. This made Jocelyn feel smug. All she did every day was show up at the dance troupe out of formality before leaving.
Some members of the dance troupe were pissed by this and wanted to give her a piece of their mind, but Evelyn stopped them with a shake of her head. Jocelyn's life was her own. She would be forced to quit the dance troupe if she couldn't pass the test. She had to take responsibility for her actions.
Besides, Evelyn didn't have time to teach Jocelyn anymore.
She thought the matter would end there. However, Cameron came to her one day and told her to give Jocelyn the principal dancer position. Initially, she didn't seem to understand what he meant. Then, she realized what he was asking when he repeated his question.
She looked up at him, and her gaze was filled with white-hot rage. "Did you just ask me to give Jocelyn the principal dancer position?"
She tried hard to control her emotions but was still unable to stop her voice from shaking.
Cameron didn't notice this. He said coldly, "She's your sister-in-law. Besides, it's just a principal dancer position. Does it matter that much?"
She was only leading a dance. How important could it be?
Evelyn lost control of herself. "You were the one who hired the best dance teacher available to teach me when you realized how much I loved dancing, Cameron. When I won my first competition, you were also the one who stayed up all night to celebrate.
"When I was ostracized after becoming the principal dancer three years ago, you were the one who encouraged me to forge ahead for the sake of my dream. You told me not to care about what others thought.
"Now, you want me to hand over the dance I've spent a year and a half choreographing to Jocelyn just like that! You know how much this means to me!" She clenched her fists. She barely managed to get the words out through her tears.
Cameron felt his heart twist at the sight of her tear-streaked face. He seemed to remember the nights Evelyn had spent at the dance troupe, practicing until the cows came home. He remembered her leaping into the air and falling back down.
He clenched his fists tightly. Ultimately, he turned and left without saying anything.
