Chapter 50
Dr. Melendez escorted us through a labyrinth of corridors that bore witness to the atrocities that had occurred outdoors. The once-beige-colored brickwork had been painted crimson in numerous places, and groups of insects swarmed around some of the complete darkness, dispersing as we managed to pass but immediately having to return to their feast. Dr. Melendez ignored them and provided no comments nor any information on the several rooms we passed in the halls. He merely walked with his head held high and a tiny hurry in his movements, almost as if he's pleased to take us wherever we're heading to.
This corridor made me feel uneasy. Just by looking at the discolored ceilings and walls, it's obvious that most people ended up dead in this exact place. Whatever occurred here happened a long time ago, but it doesn't leave me feeling any more at ease or at comfortable.
