Chapter 3

But there was one person who came by in a taxi. It was Selena. When she was getting out of the taxi, many people looked at her in surprise and some even pointed at her back. At that moment, her only thought was to give her father a birthday gift as soon as possible, and then return to the apartment to take a good rest. "Oh, Selena!" a sharp female voice came, and the elevated tone sounded very mocking. "As the young lady of the Pei family, aren't you ashamed of taking a taxi back to your family's birthday event?" Upon hearing this taunting remark, Selena paused slightly, but continued walking forward and ignored her. The physical pain and discomfort due to last night's events made Selena helpless. Besides, today was her father's birthday. Arguing with others in public on an occasion like this would only make others laugh. "Hey! I'm talking to you, Selena. Don't pretend to be deaf and dumb!" Jasmine yelled loudly, speaking rudely and arrogantly. "Jasmine, please don't yell, this is the Pei's house." In desperation, Selena stopped walking forward and turned to look at the direction of the sound. She saw a luxury sports car with the door ajar, and a woman in an exquisite dress with gorgeous makeup was standing beside the car, holding the door with one hand and a handbag in the other. "The Pei's house? So you still know the Pei family, huh? I thought you had forgotten your surname when you married into the Lu family. My uncle is really naïve for trusting a daughter like you to not cause any trouble for the family," Jasmine said sarcastically as she walked toward Selena in her high heels. "Jasmine, it's none of your business if I cause trouble or not. If you want to reminisce about the past, then we can talk about it some other day. Today is a good day for my father. I don't want to stand here and discuss other issues with you." "Reminisce about the past?" Jasmine scoffed. "There's really nothing to talk about anymore anyway." Jasmine stopped a few steps in front of Selena, her body leaning forward slightly, half covering her red lips with one hand, and smiling eagerly. "Since you and I have nothing to talk about, then I'll go first," Selena said. "Wait, today is my uncle's birthday. Aren't you afraid of embarrassing him? I'm also worried that we will be criticized because of you. Say, what birthday gift did you bring uncle today? If it is not very good, then you should not give it!" Jasmine really wouldn't stop pestering Selena at all and continued being rude to her. The loud dispute has already attracted the attention of others, and the guests who came to celebrate the birthday were either surprised or disdained. Throughout the years, all kinds of drama have been emerging one after another, but today, listening to the conversation between them, it seemed that they were the relatives of the host of the birthday banquet, and one of them was Lance Pei's daughter, which was a bit interesting. "Jasmine, don't you feel ashamed standing here and arguing with me?" Selena felt that more and more eyes were focused on the two of them, and that they were being whispered and talked about by the onlookers. Selena couldn't help but feel embarrassment rush to her heart. "Ashamed? Selena, you have done things like coming here in a taxi. What else would be more shameful than that for you?" Jasmine asked with her hands folded across her chest as she looked at Selena intently. The people watching finally figured out the reason why the two were fighting here. Some kept their demeanor and left without comment, and some started gossiping with each other.
