Chapter 7
Sirius didn't want things to go awry, so he said, "Don't tell me you've suddenly decided that you can't bear to part with these things. Didn't you say Jason was worth it?"
His provocation worked like magic. Maisie decided against reading the divorce agreement and continued signing the rest of the contracts. There was mockery in her eyes as she did so.
"I used to think you were above these things, but it seems you're just like everyone else. Greed isn't a good look on you, Sirius," she said as she signed the last agreement.
He didn't respond. He took the signed agreements and turned to head upstairs. His eyes were once filled with love, but they'd later become filled with grievance and sorrow. Now, however, they were calm.
Maisie's heart clenched at the sight. She still felt like he was hiding something from her. She wanted to go after him to get to the bottom of it when Jason grabbed her hand. He even scratched her palm.
"Thanks, Maisie," he said. "How about we eat out since you find him disgusting?"
Steven and Lila agreed. "We need to leave since everything has been taken care of. You two should spend some time together."
Jason didn't wait for Maisie to agree. He held her hand tightly and pulled her out of the house. At the same time, he secretly resolved to make Maisie his that night. He had to sleep with her and possibly impregnate her. That way, she would stop keeping him at arm's length and marry him.
…
Maisie spent the next few days by Jason's side as he started filming for the short drama. Sirius also kept busy.
First, he sent the divorce agreement to the courthouse and got his divorce certificate. Then, he sold the assets he'd gotten from Maisie and used the money to set up a charity fund called Starlight Charity. At least he could do some good deeds and contribute something to this world.
In his original world, he'd had parents who loved him deeply. However, he'd been diagnosed with an incurable disease during a medical checkup. He'd bolted from the house amid an emotional breakdown and gotten into an accident. As a result, his legs had been amputated.
His parents had been devastated for him; they'd looked like they'd aged overnight. That was why Sirius had immediately agreed to the system's request when it had approached him—if he succeeded in his mission, he would wish to return to his original world with a healthy body. It was too bad he would always be short of that 1%.
He thought about how he would face his numbered days and imperfect body upon returning to his original world. Putting on a mask and sunglasses, he went out on a stroll. Days like this, where he could walk and run freely, seemed all the more precious to him.
…
It was soon the day before Sirius' departure. His plan had been to take a ship out to see the seagulls, but that was disrupted by a call from Maisie's assistant, Brandon Johnson.
Brandon told him Maisie wanted him to attend a dinner party to negotiate the possibility of a role in a new movie. Sirius rejected without hesitation—no role held any importance to him now that he was about to leave.
Brandon said in distress, "Ms. Seaworth made it clear that I was to start off nice. If you refuse to attend, I can only…"
Sirius chuckled bitterly. He thought about how he'd been forced to give up his short drama. He also recalled that he and Maisie had first met during a dinner party. Since that was where everything had started, he would also end everything there. It was a fitting end to their story.
He went to the venue for the dinner party and entered the private room. However, Jason was the only one inside.
As soon as Sirius entered, he snarled, "How much longer are you going to cling to Maisie, Sirius? I'm the one she likes. Do you know how many positions we did it in last night? We—"
"Did you ask me to come here just to talk about that?" Sirius cut him off.
It was unnecessary. He would be leaving after tonight.
"Of course not." Jason smiled coldly. His eyes took on an evil glint. "I think people still need to rely on themselves. Rather than wait for you to get out of my way, it'd be better for me to chase you away myself."
Just then, a muscular man entered the room. He grabbed Jason's hand. His actions were restrained, but Jason still let out a howl. "No, don't do this to me! I won't take Maisie from you—I'll bury my love for her deep in my heart! Don't hurt me, please!"
At that moment, the door flew open, and Maisie charged in, her eyes red with rage. "Let him go!"
The man released Jason when he saw her.
"Thank God you came to save me, Maisie!" Jason wrapped his arms around her and sobbed. "I was so happy when Sirius invited me for a meal. I didn't expect him to hate me so much that he wanted to destroy me like this…"
Sirius instinctively refuted, "Brandon is the one who told me to come here for a dinner party!"
Brandon looked surprised. "I did no such thing. I only follow Ms. Seaworth's orders; I won't do anything she hasn't instructed me to do."
Maisie's gaze turned frosty. Instead of seeking the truth, she gave Sirius a look of disgust and hatred. "Are you that incapable of tolerating Jace's presence? How could you pull such a dirty move? I warned you that I wouldn't let you off the hook if you were to try to hurt him again, didn't I?"
She held Jason tighter and turned to the muscular man. "I don't care what you were instructed to do. Now, I want you to do it to Sirius."
