Chapter 9
The moment Eric's hand almost landed on the self-destruct device, someone grabbed his arm.
"Hold on," said Herkoen.
"Mr. Wenley?" Eric was very confused. Why would Herkoen suddenly change his mind? In the past, he would never go back on his decisions.
A million thoughts were running through Herkoen's mind at that moment. Ever since the Renegade Coalition was formed, they had a large population. The descendants of the Wenley family had always been the coalition's leaders as well.
Herkoen belonged to the generation with the highest rank for psionic strength in the Wenley family. His father had always been talking about Herkoen's descendants. He said if the Wenley family bloodline ended with Herkoen, then it would be his fault since he was Herkoen's father.
All the countries had done something to wrong the Wenley family. Before the Wenley family killed them all, their bloodline absolutely could not end.
If Daphne truly was pregnant with Herkoen's child, then he would not be letting his family down if he died in an accident in the future.
"Let's go." In the end, Herkoen chose to abandon the car and leave.
As soon as both of them landed on the ground, they were greeted by a subordinate. Then, they left in another flying car.
Herkoen glanced in the direction of the battleship as he was leaving. As they were flying at a low altitude, he had no choice but to look up.
Lester locked eyes with him.
Herkoen hated it the most when others looked down at him. It was an insult to him.
Lester was just someone who rode the coattails of his family's glory.
Every time Herkoen appeared in Hildi, he would personally come and catch him. Herkoen enjoyed playing the cat-and-mouse game with him.
Then, Herkoen gave Lester the finger to taunt him.
"Colonel Lester, do you want to send someone to go after those criminals?" a subordinate asked.
"No need." Lester knew they could never catch Herkoen.
Herkoen was the most wanted criminal, yet he was still at large, and he was able to get lucky and escape every time. That meant he was skilled. Any unplanned pursuit would only end with consequences beyond imagination.
Britney opened the door to let the approaching soldiers enter.
Daphne sat on the bed. She felt a weight had been lifted off of her chest as soon as she saw Lester.
"Are you hurt?" Lester asked with concern.
Daphne shook her head. "No."
"Ms. Miller is just saying that to not make you worry. She said her belly was aching earlier," said Britney.
Daphne felt quite embarrassed after Britney exposed her without any mercy.
Lester took two steps forward, and Daphne thought he wanted to say something. However, Daphne was lifted in the next second as he carried her tightly in her arms.
"There's no need to trouble—"
"Shh. Don't talk."
Lester stepped into the battleship with her in his arms. He let her rest in a relatively soundproof room and called for the Robo Doctor at the same time.
"Have some rest. I have some things to take care of. The Robo Doctor will leave on its own after the checkup is done. Don't worry," said Lester.
"Alright. Thank you very much for today, Colonel Lester," said Daphne.
"Don't mention it."
After Lester left, Daphne lay on the bed and did the checkup by following the instructions from the Robo Doctor.
The thought of Lester's strong arms and powerful breath as he carried her made her face flush and her heart pound.
However, when they left the flying car earlier, there was a gap between the car and the battleship, with them being one step away from each other. People on the ground looked like they were ants from up there. She would have been crushed to pieces if she fell through the gap.
"Beep, beep. The patient's heart is pounding too quickly. Calling the headquarters," said the Robo Doctor.
Daphne was stunned. She had forgotten that she was getting a checkup.
Soon, Lester came in again to check on her.
Daphne smiled with embarrassment and explained, "I was just lying in bed, and I felt a little scared as I thought about the dangerous situation just now. That was why my heart was pounding."
"Beep, beep. Based on the microexpressions detected, the patient's heart first started to pound because of shyness. Then, it started to pound due to fear," said the Robo Doctor.
Being exposed made Daphne feel too embarrassed to see Lester's face again.
Fortunately, Lester only told her to get some rest and left.
Daphne screamed her lungs out in her head as soon as the door was closed.
"Ah! It was so awkward and embarrassing! Had I known earlier, I never would have thought about those things during the examination. Nobody told me that the Robo Doctor could observe a person's expression. It was a smart technology, but can it not be so smart?" she thought.
Battleships were not allowed to enter the city unless there was an emergency, so all of them rode the flying car back into the city.
Daphne stayed in the bedroom the whole time, not daring to go to the living room. She was afraid she would be reminded of those embarrassing things if she bumped into Lester. She was a rather sensitive person.
Soon, the flying car stopped outside her room in Lester's manor.
Daphne thanked Lester as she walked past the living room. Just as she was about to leave, Lester called out to her.
"Ms. Miller, I need to know the details about what happened, so I'll ask your nanny. Of course, that'll be after she takes you back to your room," said Lester.
"Alright." Daphne thought Lester was too polite. She was staying in his manor and eating his food. Even the nanny was also his staff. However, he still asked her, a guest, for her permission.
Lester's eyebrows were furrowed tightly as he listened to Britney in the study.
"You mean the assassin who injured Lenko was actually trying to kill Ms. Miller?" he asked.
"Yes, I heard it myself in the flying car," Daphne answered.
"Was there anything unusual about her when you were with her?"
"No, sir," Daphne replied.
Herkoen had seen Daphne's medical report and learned about her special identity. He definitely would come up with a plan to bring Daphne back to his land after he returned this time.
Therefore, Lester added many defensive robots around Daphne's room. He also sent soldiers to patrol nearby. They could kill any suspicious person on sight.
Daphne did not think much about Lester summoning Britney. She just took it as Britney getting her statements recorded. After all, Lester definitely had to explain things to his superior after something so serious happened.
She did not think at all that Lester would still be suspicious of her.
Days went by, and soon, it was her due date.
During that time, Lenko would contact her after school. Both of them talked about the interesting things around them.
The coalition did not make any movements either.
That was until the day Daphne went into labor.
Daphne had a special identity, and Bryan was the only one in the hospital who knew about it. Because of that, Lester had someone bring Bryan over after he learned that Daphne would be giving birth soon.
Lester was not going to get Bryan to personally deliver the child, but some of the instruments needed to be operated by a person.
For example, every female would react differently in labor because their bodies were different. If anything were to go wrong, a person could provide treatment right away. Machines, on the other hand, were coded with programs, so they could only provide treatment after they conducted an examination.
"Congratulations, Daphne. You're about to give birth. The system will block the labor pain for you. Do you choose to block it?"
At that moment, Daphne's body was constantly having labor pains, so she immediately chose to block it.
Sure enough, she was no longer in pain in the next second. However, she still acted like she was in pain to not draw the attention of others.
"There is still about an hour more until your delivery. Please wait patiently," the system alert said.
