"Okay! Mr. Hackett, I'll remember everything you said!" Aurelia replied.
Outside the yard, Elio barked abruptly.
Aurelia glanced toward the gate, and her eyes dimmed with disappointment.
She knew what the bark meant. It was Elio telling her that Maeve had come to get her.
"Levi, do we really have to wait until next year to see each other again?"
"Yeah," Levi said softly. He held out his pinky finger. "This is our little secret, Aurelia. You promised me, remember?"
"I remember."
Aurelia hooked her small pinky around his and repeated, "I promised you. This is our secret. I won't tell Mommy."
"Good."
Levi reached out and gently ruffled her hair. "Go on now."
Aurelia hesitated. Her feet were rooted to the ground as she stared at him.
Outside, Maeve's voice grew closer.
