Chapter 16
As night approached, a sleek, black-colored sedan pulled up and parked near the block where Yvonne and Wesley lived.
Everything was dark, and only the dimly lit cigarette spared some light on the man’s gloomy face. The expensive watch on his wrist showed that it was nearing three in the morning, but the woman was still nowhere to be found. There was a mocking smile on Jackson’s face. He had been waiting for nearly five hours.
He knew the woman would be spending the night with Zachary. When he saw how intimate they were that day, he could not stop himself from wanting to come over and take a look.
He had hoped in his heart that it was not true, but the reality proved that it was merely his imagination.
After throwing his cigarette away, he started the car and drove off. Soon enough, the car had vanished into the night.
When he returned, his mother, Jade, was still awake and was waiting for him in the living room. When she saw that Jackson had got back, she complained, “Jackson, what on earth is going on with you? Secretary Summers finally found the time to have dinner with us today, but you just walked away halfway through dinner? What do you mean by that?”
“Mom, I had work matters to attend to! Didn't I explained myself to you?” Jackson replied with a tired expression on his face.
“Work matters? Are you sure that it wasn’t because of Yvonne Yates? Jackson, I know you can’t forget her, but that woman is an evil b*tch. Not only did she hurt you, but she also murdered Fiona’s child. Why do you still care about that evil woman?”
“Mom, I don’t care about her!” Jackson denied.
“It’s good that you’re not thinking about her anymore. You’re not young anymore, and Fiona likes you so much. You two are a good match in both social statuses and looks. Hurry up and get married already, so that you can give birth to a plump, happy kid. When that happens, I won’t need to worry about you.”
“We’ll talk about this next time. I’m really tired. I’m going upstairs to sleep!”
Jade sighed when she saw the tired look on her son’s face. Three years had passed, and her son had kept himself busy for all three years. His company had grown, and he was earning even more than before. However, there was never a smile on her son’s face, and it was all because of that unlucky black cat, Yvonne Yates!
That cursed woman! Why had she returned after leaving in the first place?
She must have come back to stir up trouble after finding out that her son and Fiona were getting engaged! A look of despair appeared on Jade's face. She needed to do something about this. She had to talk to that jinxed woman to stay away from her son. It would be best for everyone if she got out of South City and disappeared from their lives, just like how she did three years ago!
Yvonne went to the hospital to accompany her uncle after parting ways with Zachary that night. When the sun was up, she rose and went to the farmer’s market to get chicken so she could boil chicken soup for her uncle. On the way back with fresh chicken in her hands, she saw Jade standing there with a subdued expression on her face.
When Jade saw Yvonne, she walked over and stood in her way. “I have something to say to you.”
“I don’t have time!” Yvonne immediately refused without a second thought.
“I just need one thing from you.” Jade had purposely come here to wait for Yvonne, so there was no way she was going to let her go that easily. “Yvonne Yates, name me your price!”
“Name you my price?”
“Yes. I know you were unhappy when you were asked to leave the Miller family without a single cent. Now that Jackson is getting engaged, you are back to cause trouble for him and Fiona. I’m telling you this now: I will never allow Jackson to be with you. You should abandon that hope altogether!”
“Don’t worry, Madam Miller. We’re on the same page regarding this,” Yvonne shot back.
“Is that so? In that case, leave South City immediately. I’ll pay you the money, and you will leave once you get it!”
Instead of getting angry, Yvonne smiled at her arrogant and overbearing former mother-in-law. “How much are you prepared to give me, Madam Miller?”
“Is a million dollars enough?” When she saw that Yvonne barely smiled and did not say anything, she immediately added, “Two million dollars. And I’ll add on another five hundred thousand dollars if you leave immediately!”
“Two and a half million dollars? Do you think I’m only worth that much, Madam Miller?”
“How much do you want?”
Yvonne showed her hand, and Jade frowned when she saw it. “Ten million dollars? Yvonne Yates, do you think my family grows money on trees?”
“You’re wrong, Madam Miller. I want one hundred million dollars. I’ll agree to leave immediately if you give me a hundred million dollars!”
“A hundred million? Have you been thinking about money so much that you’ve lost your mind?” The expression on Jade’s face changed abruptly.
“Well, you asked me to name a price, right? So I’m telling you now that I’ll only leave if you give me a hundred million dollars. If not, you can continue dreaming!”
“You shameless b*tch, how dare you try to take advantage of me!” Jade was so angry that she started raising her voice. Yvonne laughed mockingly and said, “What’s wrong, Madam Miller? Feeling ashamed and angry now? Why do you pretend to be rich when you can’t afford the price that I asked?”
“Yvonne Yates, don’t act so arrogant when I’m giving you a chance to walk away with your head up. You should be grateful that I didn’t ask you to take responsibility for Fiona’s miscarriage in the past years. If you don’t listen to me now, you only have yourself to blame for what happens next!”
“Oh? I’m interested to see what you will do, Madam Miller. You wouldn’t be thinking of branding your future daughter-in-law as a mistress, would you? A secretary’s precious daughter being a homewrecker would make interesting headlines, don’t you think?”
“You!” Jade was speechless. She did not expect Yvonne, who used to be quiet and submissive, to argue back in such a manner. Yvonne did not waste any more time with Jade and walked right past her.
As Jade watched Yvonne walk away, she let out a cold laugh. “Little b*tch, you’re still too young to win in a battle against a veteran like me. Just wait and see how you’re going to go down!”
