Chapter 5
After the elevator stop. I exit it and walked to my apartment which was down the hall. I pushed my keys in and opened the door. When I entered, Mr. Carter followed behind me. And just like every time I came home, I was greeted by my dog, Grey.
"Hey, baby. Did you miss me today?" I said in a playful voice as bent down to pat my golden retriever.
Mr. Carter cleared his throat behind me, I guess he was trying to tell me that I wasn't alone. But I didn't really care, I loved Grey and he deserves to be treated with love and affection. I stand up and move further in the apartment. I signal Mr. Carter to follow behind me. I could tell his scrutinizing looks that he wasn't pleased with my living condition.
I still didn't quite understand what Mr. Ryan said when he meant by a man of status. Was Mr. Carter someone very important to America?
I knew he was rich but how rich was he and what did Mr. Ryan mean?
"You live here?" Mr. Carter was standing next to my couch looking at me.
"No, I visit my dog here every day." I said in a sarcastic tone.
Obviously I live here.
He rolled his eyes and look to my dog who was wagging his tail beside him. Grey was waiting to be pat by him. What a traitor of a dog!
"You can have a seat," I said and pointed to my couch.
I looked down at my black leather couch contemplating if he should sit. I really wanted to say something, but I kept my mouth shut, I didn't want to worsen my situation.
He accepted my offer and sat down.
"I'll be right with you, I just need to get some food in Grey's dish." I walked over to my kitchen which was attached to the living room. I climbed up on the little chair, so I could reach the cupboard that had the dog food in it.
Major Short girl problem. I can never reach anything.
I turned around looking at the couch to see my Mr. Carter patting Grey. I froze with the dog food in my hand. I always thought my dog was 100% dedicated to me but I guess I was wrong. He wasn't playing me or the food in my hand any attention. He was enjoying his rub.
I looked at the two playing and getting friendly until Mr. Carter's voice brought me back to reality.
"You can stop staring, just get the papers so I can confirm your identity and see what goes next." He said still looking at my dog. I rolled my eyes, returning my attention to the pack of Dog chows in my hands. After placing some in the dish I put back the bag in the cupboard above.
Since I had to walk pass the couch to get to my bed room, I gave my dog a look at which he howled at. I smiled, who says dogs don't understand humans?
I went in my drawer for the key to my safe. I kneeled on the ground and draw out the iron box that was under my bed. When I got it opened, I searched until I found the various documents that he needed.
When I went back to the living room he was still getting comfy with my dog. I went in front of the two of them and break their connection. "Here," I handed him the documents that would prove that I am indeed Kalliyah Bisson and not Alliyah Bisson. I even dropped in a picture of the both of us when we were young.
He took his hands off my dog and accepted the documents. I turned to my dog and gave him the look, he groans. I smiled internally, that's what you get for ignoring me. "Go, your food is in the dish." He didn't move. "Grey," I said I a warning tone, he got up and went to the kitchen for his dinner. I smiled to myself. I love my dog. I had received him as a gift from my sister before she betrayed me. He was the only thing I had that made me feel good about myself. He was the only thing I had left of her, the real her.
I watch as Mr. Carter eyed my documents. The way he was looking through each document made it seem like a job interview and for some reason, I was nervous to know if I could the job and by the job I meant if my documents were good enough.
Not liking the idea of hovering over him while he examines my life, I walked back to my bedroom with the intent of changing out of the work clothes. I looked in my drawers to find something to put on.
I felt weird changing, knowing that there was a man less than five feet away and he wasn't just any man.
I took my glasses off and placed them at my bedside. I pulled my hair out of the bun and let it fall to my shoulder. After putting on the jeans and a shirt I exit my bedroom.
Grey was laying at Mr. Carter's feet, so I decided to have a seat in the sofa parallel to Mr. Carter.
When I sat down, Mr. Carter eyes shift from the papers and began to stare me down. I felt a little uncomfortable.
He clears his throat and then said, "Well, Ms. Bisson, we have some trouble here."
"What kind of trouble do we have?" I raised my eyebrows, what damage did my sister do this time?
"Based on these files, you seem to be the sister of Alliyah Bisson and not her." He pauses then back down at the files. "Your sister was having an affair with my father and she got pregnant. She left the baby at my office a few weeks ago."
