Margarita had only seen her niece several times. How could she let her niece take the blame for her crime?
“I did something awful, Este,” Margarita anxiously spoke. “If I turn myself in, I might get a lighter sentence.”
“No! Este yelled angrily at her mother, startling her.
Este grasped her mother’s trembling hands. “Izaak will not forgive you, mom. If that doctor is in jail, Izaak and I can get back together finally. You can’t turn yourself in, okay? Please. Gabriella has to go to jail.”
Margarita caressed her daughter’s face. Most of the time, she couldn’t understand Este. Her irrational behaviors were disturbing, but Este was her whole world. She would do anything for her, even if it meant framing her own niece.
But she had to appeal to Este once more. “Honey, how long do you think a lie could last? If Gabriella confesses, the police will come and get me. On top of manslaughter, hiding will only make things worse.”
