Sitting in the interrogation room, I watched Evelyn waltz in with a smug smile plastered across her face.
"Rinatta," she began, her tone dripping with faux sympathy. "As a McLennon Group employee and the future Mrs. McLennan, it's only right that I come to bail you out."
Then, she leaned in slightly, her smile sharpening. "But you'd better cooperate with the police and confess everything you've done. It'll help reduce your sentence, don't you think?"
In just a few words, she managed to insinuate my guilt, setting the police even further against me. The officers, already treating me with disdain, now glared at me with even less patience.
"Rinatta, you'd better start talking, or you won't be leaving this place anytime soon."
I kept my expression cool. "Unless you have actual evidence, you can only detain me for 48 hours."
I glanced at Evelyn and said, "I'm rejecting the lawyer she brought. Contact my supervisor instead."
