Chapter 12 It’s Not That I Don’t Want Her
For a moment, Chiara was in a dilemma. “B-But he usually takes Ivanka with him to these events to show that they’re a loving couple, and he does it for his company’s benefit. Why would he bring me along this time?”
Lyla smirked scornfully. “Things have changed.”
“Huh?”
Lyla tugged on Chiara’s arm and sat her down. “Ivanka is no longer who she was. Your father has gotten his hands on all of her family’s belongings. Ivanka has nothing left in her name. You’re the real princess of the Lane family now, do you understand?”
“If that’s the case, it’s even unlikely for Mic to bring me along to the banquet. The public will think that the Barkworth family is heartless for casting Ivanka aside at the moment her father lost his position.”
“Pfft! Money is the thing that makes the world go round these days. Although your father is not as powerful as the Barkworth family, he is still one of the leading figures in Bostone. The reason Samuel Barkworth allowed the marriage between Ivanka and Michael was because he had faith in our family’s ability, and he believed that the cooperation between powerful families will bring greater benefits. But now, Ivanka’s father has lost his position to your father. Do you think Samuel would still regard her as highly?”
Chiara sank into contemplative silence. Meanwhile, Lyla continued speaking, “Michael had to visit you in secret in the past. But now, he visits you frequently. Even so, Samuel has said nothing to stop him, and neither has he given us any warning. This shows that Samuel has allowed you two to be together, understand?”
Before Ivanka’s father lost his position, Samuel Barkworth had only implicitly warned them to protect their reputations. But his attitude on the matter was different now.
Chiara gave it some thought before saying, “You’re right. I’ll tell Mic about this.”
While Lyla and Chiara had a peaceful discussion, things were different on Barkworth’s Group’s side.
Animosity burned in the CEO’s office.
Bam!
Rosie slammed her fist on the table and shouted, “What?! You two are getting a divorce?!”
Samuel frowned and glared at her. “You’re behaving like a completely unreasonable woman right now.”
Rosie just scoffed when she heard her husband chastising her. She pointed to her own nose and said, “I’m unreasonable? You must have been blind when you married me back then, huh?”
Samuel Barkworth’s expression darkened. “I don’t want to quarrel with you, but keep your voice down. We’re inside the company. Pay attention to your decorum. Seriously, I shouldn’t have brought you here!”
Michael sat in his chair with a dark look on his face as he watched the old couple quarreling with each other on the couch. He found himself troubled.
After some time, Samuel turned to Michael and said coolly, “You’re right in getting a divorce. After all, Ivanka is no longer the heiress of the Lane family. Chiara has replaced her.”
Rosie gnashed her teeth in anger. “Nonsense! Chiara is just a b*tch! Are you two blind?!”
“Regardless, she is Michael’s savior. Michael has the obligation to marry her! Even though the Lane family is not the most prestigious family in Bostone, they provide the best wooden materials for building construction in the country. It won’t hurt us to cooperate with them.”
Rosie’s heart ached for Ivanka the moment she learned that her beloved granddaughter-in-law was about to be abandoned.
Rosie slammed her fist on the table again. “Your stupid interests are of no concern to me! It’s not as if you’ll be alive to spend all that money you earned, anyway! You already have one leg in your grave! Why are you still thinking about making money?! I do not approve of this!”
Michael frowned. He cast a glance at Samuel to convey his thoughts. “Why did you bring her along?”
Samuel was annoyed as well. He thought he must have had a few screws loose in his head when he brought the crazy woman along with him.
However, although they often quarreled, they were actually very close to each other.
Michael looked at Rosie. “Grandma, it’s not that I don’t want her. She is the one who insisted on getting a divorce!”
