CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY EIGHT –THE LAST ON DECK
As they lapsed back into silence, Nia felt a subtle shift in the air between them. The shared trauma had created a fragile connection, a reminder of the bond they once shared. It wasn't forgiveness, not yet, but it was a start.
Their moment of quiet reflection was interrupted by a flurry of activity on the deck. The coast guard's rescue operation was in full swing, with more survivors being brought aboard every few minutes.
Despite her exhaustion, Nia felt compelled to help. She stood up, wobbling slightly as she regained her land legs.
"I'm going to see if they need any assistance," she told Leon.
He looked like he wanted to protest, to tell her to rest, but instead, he nodded. "Be careful," he said softly.
Nia made her way to the main deck, where coast guard personnel were coordinating the rescue efforts. She approached one of the officers, a tall woman with a commanding presence.
"Excuse me," Nia said. "I was wondering if there's anything I can do to help."
