Chapter 9
The chief interviewer had a regretful graze, it was as if he was apologizing for something out of his control. At this point she just wanted to get up and run away in shame.
However, her good upbringing made her sit quietly on the chair. After answering three questions, the man who had been sitting silently in the corner gave a light cough.
"How old are you this year?" He asked without hesitation.
The man felt the surprise of everyone in the room, but he still looked at Wendy calmly. His slender legs were crossed as he sat on the simple chair. His eyes were unfathomable, and there was an innocent curiosity in his eyes, but that only made him more terrifying.
Although Wendy was puzzled, she was relieved because of this question. Just before she could answer, an interviewer interrupted her and said, "Ms. Su is twenty-three this year. She's been married for a year and she used to work for the Gu Group-"
His fingers tapped on the circular willow table, the man's beautiful eyebrows were slightly furrowed, his eyes were stained with impatience, and his whole face seemed a lot sharper.
The man who answered his question didn't realize his answer would offend the president. He thought about his answer for a few seconds and he decided to talk about her work experience instead, he said cautiously, "Ms. Su only has one year of assistant work experience in Gu's finance department. We were discussing on whether to keep her or not. After all, the Shengyang Group has high standards for financial talents."
He didn't know whether it was just an illusion, but the man who was talking felt like the world was closing in on him. The president kept his emotionless expression. He had his hands clasped together, as if he had made a decision already.
"How old is Director Xu this year?"
"Um... forty-six, President Lu." There was a drop of sweat on his brow.
"You've been working here for a long time, haven't you? Surely, you know what to do, don't you?" he asked in an unemotional voice.
Director Xu couldn't guess what the president was thinking. He couldn't make up his mind on whether to keep Wendy or not. He felt like his future was riding on this one decision as the president judges his worth in the corporate world.
He looked away as if he was thinking of something, he finally broke the silence and he said, "Although Ms. Su's work experience is still inadequate, we did hear about her work at the Gu Group. She is methodical, careful and serious in doing things. I believe Shengyang needs such talented people, and I believe that with just a bit of training, she will become an outstanding employee."
As he finished speaking, Director Xu felt like he was going to collapse.
The man raised his eyebrows and he stared at him for a long time. After a long time, Director Xu felt like his old face was about to be stretched apart. Then he heard his low and deep voice, "Well then, Director Xu, please keep up the good work. I don't have much experience in personnel management, and I look forward to learning more from you in the future."
It had a pleasant tone, and it didn't have a hint of sarcasm. It was almost genuine.
Director Xu realized the reason why the president was unhappy in an instant.
Companies are led by a board of directors, with a president to lead said directors. The president had most of the shares of the Shengyang group, it gave him authority within the company, but he was still alone. If he wanted to control Shengyang even further he needed people who were loyal to him in various departments.
There was a surprise inspection and he personally came to the personnel department. Wendy was very inexperienced despite the company's high standards, but she still got an interview. He thought that the president had special plan and Wendy was his first step.
Director Xu got a headache from worrying too much, he wiped the sweat off his forehead, and he said in a flat tone, "Oh, nonsense. The company needs more young and lively adults to make things fun."
In the end, Wendy unexpectedly stayed.
When the interview ended, the man and his assistant were walking out. The man had a straight posture, and when he walked by Wendy, his footsteps sounded like they were slowing down. Behind him, Joe looked at Wendy with a smile, "Congratulations, Ms. Su."
"Thank you," Wendy answered politely.
Upon seeing this scene, Director Xu also walked to her side, and he patted her on the shoulder appreciatively, "We look forward to working with you."
Joe looked at the president who was waiting in front of him, and he teased him, "President Lu, all of this would've been a lot easier if you had just hired her directly."
Joe Qiao met Tobias when he was studying in the United States.
The media rarely captured Tobias Lu, the youngest of the Lu family. The Lu family's ancestral home was in Jiangcheng, but the Lu family immigrated to the United States twenty years ago.
The Lu family was a large international business family. Tobias was the youngest grandson of the Lu family and he was the only businessman in his family who didn't rely on his parents to succeed.
His grandfather was once furious because he didn't return to his company to help, but his wife prevented him from doing anything. From then on, the business went smoothly.
His tall and slender figure was reflected on the golden elevator doors. He leaned sideways as he listened to Joe's teasing. There was an indifferent curvature on his firm chin. When the elevator arrived, he took the lead in walking in.
"Are you coming?" Tobias asked in a low voice.
Joe asked helplessly, "I heard Harry say that you found a woman you like. Isn't it this woman?"
