Chapter 2

The insults from everyone around me grew louder, but I didn't care at all. That was because everything I said was the truth. Gibson Corporation went from a small company with just a few employees three years ago to a publicly-listed company with over 10 thousand employees, all thanks to me—or rather, the people who backed me up. It had nothing to do with Kiara at all. Back then, Morris Gibson, the founder of Gibson Corporation, traveled all the way from Sovannah to Jygen City just to ask me to marry his granddaughter. In his hand was an arranged marriage agreement with Grandpa's signature on it. Back then, I was young and didn't understand what love was. I only assumed there must be a reason behind Grandpa's arrangement. I never expected that after I single-handedly helped Gibson Corporation rise to its current position, I would end up being labeled a useless person. My anger grew upon thinking about it. I decided to look for Morris and get to the bottom of things. I had to learn whether the Gibsons were really planning to turn against me. If he insisted on letting Kiara remain as the chairman, I wouldn't hesitate to bring the Gibsons back to where they were three years ago. "Wait!" Aaron called out just as I was about to leave. "Are you going to leave just like that, Quinsley?" I slowly turned around and glanced at the stage. "What's wrong? Are you planning to buy me a meal, Mr. Wembley?" Aaron grinned wickedly at me as he replied, "You have to hand in everything that belongs to the company before you leave." I narrowed my eyes as I met his gaze. "I've already given you my work badge. What else is there to hand in?" Aaron scoffed before raising the microphone in his hand. "Take off your uniform!" The entire room erupted in chatter as soon as he spoke. Most of the employees were looking at me smugly, while only a few who were closer to me gave me looks of concern. What a group of fair-weather friends indeed! Everyone addressed me politely when I was still a manager, but now that I'd been fired, no one stepped up to say anything. Was this the level of professionalism at a listed company? It seemed like the rapid growth of Gibson Corporation in just three years was too fast for the Gibsons to handle. Seeing that I wasn't responding, Aaron continued irritably, "Hey, Quinsley, I'm talking to you! Are you pretending not to hear me?" I smiled, looking calmly at him. "What if I refuse to take it off?" "You're the first person to ever dare threaten me to my face. I wonder where your courage comes from." Aaron raised his brows and looked at me in contempt. He didn't take me seriously at all. "How dare you act so cocky when even your wife has abandoned you?" he continued. I couldn't help but burst out laughing when I heard his words. "Who told you that I can only rely on Kiara?" The employees close to Aaron started criticizing me as soon as I finished talking. "Oh my, I didn't know Ms. Gibson's pet dog could talk!" "That's right! Anyone who didn't know better would've thought you're someone amazing. You're just a pretty face who's living off someone else!" "If Ms. Gibson hears this, you might get punished when you get back later." They were laughing as they talked, and they seemed very excited. I quietly noted down their names. "If I remember correctly, you guys are in cahoots with Aaron, aren't you?"
