Chapter 4

Savannah felt as if a lightning bolt had struck her. She froze in place while her mind went blank. She realized, with horror, that after marrying her, Wyatt had rushed to have their first child, Chase. Though she hadn't planned on having a second child and had no desire to remain a housewife, Wyatt had pushed for it—just when she had secured a role in a big production movie. At that time, she had fallen for his sweet words and agreed to have another child, unknowingly sacrificing her career once more. So, this had been part of their carefully crafted plot. They had planned to sever any chance she had at developing her career in the entertainment industry. Wyatt leaned down and reminded Chase, "You can't tell anyone you saw Brielle today. This is our secret." Chase responded without skipping a beat, "I know, Daddy. Just like last time." Their practiced exchange made it clear that this wasn't the first time. Ignoring the pangs of pain in her abdomen, Savannah rushed back home. She found a few strands of Chase's hair in the bathroom and grabbed her toothbrush. A family friend owned the private hospital for her routine checkups, so she had no choice but to head to another hospital to get a paternity test. After a tense half-day, the results came back, and they confirmed Chase was not her child. It was heartbreaking. Savannah contacted the hospital she had visited earlier and asked, "Hello, is there any chance I could move up my procedure? I've made up my mind." The staff replied, "Of course. I'll arrange it for you. Your surgery can be scheduled for next Monday." When Savannah finally returned home, exhausted, she found Wyatt standing at the door with Chase's hand in his. The scene should have been heartwarming, yet to her, it was an eyesore. Chase ran into her arms. "Mommy, I missed you so much." Savannah squeezed out a smile and pulled him away. She stared at his face, which bore a striking resemblance to Brielle's, and asked, "Did you have fun at daycare today?" Chase subconsciously glanced at Wyatt, who gave him a subtle nod as an indication. With a practiced calm, Chase recited his side of the story in his usual innocent tone, "Yes, Mommy. We played lots of games and even did some drawing with the other kids." Savannah's heart shattered as she looked at the child she had raised for five years lying to her face. He was deceiving her alongside Brielle. She felt as if she had raised a traitor. Wyatt stepped forward and said pretentiously, "It's my fault. I should've gone with you to the checkup yesterday. If you're upset, let out your emotions so our baby can grow healthy." As he spoke, he gently patted Savannah's shoulder. His face was full of feigned guilt, but his eyes held a cold, almost imperceptible detachment. "Our baby," Savannah thought bitterly. More like his and Brielle's baby. Hearing Wyatt's fake concern and seeing the elaborate dinner he had prepared, Savannah felt nauseated. She made an excuse about feeling unwell and retreated to the bedroom to rest. After that, while Wyatt was in the shower, Savannah snuck into his study. She had never been allowed inside before. But today, she was determined to find out everything.
