Kimberly huffed and turned away slightly, her expression still tense. “Fine. Whatever.”
I took a deep breath, feeling my anger start to subside. “Look, I didn’t mean to upset you. I just thought we could do something nice. If you want to keep being mad about it, that’s your choice.”
“Oh, shut up,” Kimberly snapped.
“You shut up!" I retorted.
The shit at the table was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Kimberly’s cold stare was making me feel like I was being put under a microscope. I could barely contain my anger as we continued to exchange barbed comments.
“Why are you so bent out of shape over this?” I demanded, feeling my frustration reach a boiling point. “It’s just ice cream and kids. It’s not like I’m trying to make you look bad on purpose.”
Kimberly’s face flushed with irritation. “Oh, please. You’re acting like you’re some kind of saint for buying them ice cream. It’s just a way for you to feel superior.”
