My entire body grew warm with embarrassment. What were the chances of running into that woman the day of our dinner? Now I was being forced to sit across from her and listen to her demean me?
When Fletcher’s hand landed on my thigh, my body froze. The movement felt odd but seeped into my skin like a heating pad.
Heidi’s beady eyes were full of laughter at her comment. The fact that she had to belittle me to feel good about herself said a lot.
“You have one more time to speak to my wife that way and I’ll hand your ass to you in front of everyone,” Fletcher said.
His standing up for me felt good. It made me sit a little taller in my chair and feel better about myself.
“We’re not doing this,” Mr. Henry said. “We’re not getting into a fight in this restaurant.”
Georgie sat back against his chair and chuckled. “What is the meaning of this? We both agreed that Fletcher would marry Heidi if he wasn’t married—”
