Memorial week, final day
Chase stepped into the room that morning, carrying a steaming tray of breakfast.
He placed it on the side of the bed, and sat patiently, watching Mirabel as she slept. Her hair poured in soft ringlets over the pillows, and her small lithe body was wrapped in a black satin robe.
She was so beautiful.
He just had no idea why his wife was pretending to be asleep. He could see from the fluttering of her eyes behind her eyelids, and the tension in her neck, as well as her hitched breath.
“Are you going to open your eyes, wife? Or do I need to pretend to wake you up?” Chase said softly.
Mirabel stiffened, shocked that she had been caught. She slowly opened her eyes, to meet those devastating blues watching her intimately.
Her heart began to pound. In apprehension, guilt and fear.
Had Spencer told him what she had tried to do yesterday? She stayed up all night worrying about it, and come morning, she realized she couldn't even face Chase.
