The moon lit the way as Charlotte returned to Cedarwood Mansion.
Autumn came early this year.
Charlotte wrapped the shawl around her shoulders against the chilly wind.
She coughed when she came out of the car.
Elsie was with her. ‘Madam, let’s go inside.’
Charlotte picked up her pace.
They both ignored the gun-toting guards patrolling the grounds.
Sebastian stood in the open doorway. ‘Good evening, Madam.’
Charlotte nodded without a smile.
‘The cook has prepared dinner.’ Sebastian stepped aside to let Charlotte in.
‘I’m not hungry.’
‘Perhaps you’d be interested in dessert.’ The majordomo stood in the middle of the living room, blocking the way to the staircase.
Charlotte stopped to stare at him. ‘I’m not interested.’
Sebastian lowered his gaze and stepped aside quietly.
Charlotte went up the stairs.
The majordomo sighed and followed her.
The thick door to the study opened.
