Chapter 12

When Dad regained consciousness in his hospital bed, the first thing he said was that he wanted to see Oscar. Unfortunately, Oscar was nowhere to be found. He was busy accompanying Tracy and hadn't even bothered to stay at the hospital. If Dad wanted to see him, we would have to get him ourselves. Mom covered her mouth and broke into tears when she heard Oscar's name. Just earlier, when Dad had been rushed into emergency care, Mom had completely lost her temper when she saw Oscar and Tracy following behind. She had yelled at them angrily, unable to hold her emotions back anymore. In truth, Mom hadn't even said anything particularly cruel. Both she and Dad came from learned families, and they had once been university lecturers. Their refined upbringing and education made it impossible for them to spew truly vulgar or hurtful words.
