Chapter 2: An Ungrateful Scoundrel
"Sally!!"
Emily was so furious she couldn't find the words to say. She never expected Sally to take an interest in her man.
At this moment, Danny's eyes were filled with sorrow. He looked at Emily, softly murmuring, "We've been together for so long. You know how I've treated you. I don't understand, now that the tough times are over, why do you want to leave me now?"
"Forget it, a forced relationship won't last. It's just my one-sided wishful thinking. I don't blame you."
Danny's words made his heart ache even more. He never imagined there would be a day he would leave the woman he considered his life. It was unbearably cruel for him.
However, Danny's gaze fell on the rich young man standing nearby.
"So you're the one who caused the scandal with Emily? Are you the reason she broke up with me?"
"That's right," Emily responded smugly, walking over to the man's side, clearly no longer intending to pretend.
The man stubbed out his cigarette and wrapped an arm around Emily's shoulders. "I'm Anthony, chairman of Weiler Group and a good friend of Miss Emily. Her company has already received my full support."
Danny took a deep breath, relaxing his entire body. It was better to have things out in the open than to continue tolerating endlessly.
At this moment, Danny suddenly extended his hand toward Emily. "Give me back the ring I gave you when we started dating. It belonged to my grandmother."
Without hesitation, Emily took it off. "It's hideous. If you hadn't mentioned it, I would have thrown it away by now."
As she spoke, Emily took out a check. "Don't say I'm heartless. Here's a million dollars. Take the money and never show up in front of me again."
"A million dollars?"
Danny couldn't help but laugh coldly. "Keep your money. Everything you have now was built with my help, and it cost far more than a million."
"We're breaking up peacefully. Let's never see each other again. I hope you take care of yourself from now on."
Danny took the ring and carefully placed it in his pocket, completely ignoring the check, and walked out boldly.
Sally got out of bed, wanting to follow Danny, but Emily blocked her.
"Where are you going? Get back in bed. If it weren't for your car accident today, I wouldn't have known you were interested in that loser."
Although Sally was unhappy, she had feared Emily since they were children. Now, Emily was also funding her education. If they fell out, Sally might not even have a place to stay.
"Emily, you shouldn't break up with Danny. You'll regret it for the rest of your life."
"Hmph, you don't need to worry about my business. I warn you, if I ever see you with him again, I won't see you anymore."
Despite her harsh words, Emily felt a pang of pain watching Danny leave. After all, they had been together for so long, and she knew how well he treated her. But she couldn't accept her boyfriend being a loser.
As Danny walked along the road, he stared ahead blankly. He had walked this path countless times, but this time felt inexplicably sad.
Letting go was also a relief; pretending for so long had been exhausting.
"Bro, have you eaten? How are you doing recently? Without me to piss you off, are you sleeping better without nightmares?"
Danny was an optimist who never let things bother him.
To maintain good family relations, he thick-skinnedly called his older brother.
"It's you? I don't have a brother like you!"
Hearing Danny's voice, the other party was furious, panting heavily. "You bastard, leaving me alone at the company while you wander off, experiencing the life of an ordinary person, studying veterinary medicine. I swear you're just wasting time."
"At last month's family gathering, your sisters were asking about you. They're all highly successful now. And then there's you, a useless bum!"
"I thought you'd come to your senses after some fun, but you found a beggar's daughter to be your girlfriend. Dad was so angry he wanted to skin you alive!"
As the youngest son of the Asta Group, Danny's net worth had long exceeded a billion. He could have smoothly inherited the family business, but he was interested in medicine, particularly veterinary medicine, which meant his brother had to work late every night.
"Bro, don't get so worked up. I just wanted to tell you I broke up with her."
Dating Emily had caused endless complaints from the family, making it a huge joke. If outsiders knew, they'd laugh their heads off. Some even wanted to disown Danny.
"Are you serious?"
"Seriously, but I'm not coming back yet. I'll show up for Dad's birthday as a surprise."
There was a pause on the other end. "Alright, Dad has a friend in March City, about Grandpa's age. I heard he's not doing well. If you're free, go check on him."
"I've heard his granddaughter is your age and very pretty. I was going to save her, but since you just broke up, she's all yours."
Danny sighed. "If he's sick, I can help. If I can heal animals, a person should be no problem."
Danny wasn't interested in the girl; he was excited that his skills could finally be put to use.
Suddenly, as Danny was walking down, he ran into Emily's mother, Leila, and her brother, Luke.
Leila gave Danny a disdainful look. "Why are you still here? Get out of my house. You disgust me."
"So you knew Emily was breaking up with me?"
"Hmph, did you really think she could marry you? Don't be ridiculous. You're trash, fit only for the trash heap."
Leila smugly looked at her villa. "Emily earned this through hard work. You don't deserve her."
Danny was stunned and then laughed in anger.
At this moment, Luke blocked Danny. "Did my sister give you money? Hand it over."
"She did, but I didn't take it."
"Hmph, a pauper like you was only with my sister for her money. How much have you taken?"
With that, Luke pinned Danny against the wall. Leila wasn't idle either; she stripped Danny's clothes and searched thoroughly but found nothing.
At this moment, Leila noticed the ring.
"You said you didn't take anything. What about this?"
"This was left to me by my grandmother. Since Emily and I have broken up, I have every right to take it back."
Luke glared and cursed. "In my house, everything belongs to us. This is stealing. We could kill you, and no one would investigate."
Danny couldn't be bothered to argue. He pushed Luke away and grabbed the ring from Leila.
"You piece of trash, how dare you push me?"
Leila, like a shrew, lunged at Danny but slipped and fell.
"Danny! How dare you hit my mom? I'm going to kill you!"
Danny had had enough. This family was a bunch of ingrates. If it weren't for him working tirelessly, they would still be crammed into a tiny 40-square-meter rental.
As Luke charged at him, Danny kicked him in the stomach, leaving Luke writhing in pain on the floor.
Seeing her son hurt, Leila started shouting, "This is outrageous! Someone's going to die!"
