Chapter 13
Laura
I spent three days in the hospital and for those three days, Liam Miller shocked the air out of me with his drastic change in attitude.
My usually grumpy and overbearing boss offered me and Maria two rooms in his mansion, then he told Maria that she could take a break and stay with me at the hospital, as if those were not enough, he visited us at the hospital everyday bringing food with him whenever he is coming to visit.
"Oh Liam, you don't have to," I heard Maria tell someone at the door.
"Speak of the devil," I muttered as Liam Miller and Maria moved close.
"Good afternoon," I greeted sitting properly.
"Good afternoon," he replied
"You didn't have to come, I'm getting discharged today," I blurted after a few minutes of silence.
"I know, I'm here to drive you to my place," he said frowning, he looked like a handsome frog.
"You didn't have to, we could have taken a cab," I said unable to control myself
"Then something happens again and I have to answer questions about what happened to my employees,"
"Doesn't mean something bad can't happen in your car, we could get into an accident...."
"Laura!" Maria called firmly, clearly sending me a warning.
"Thank you, Mr. Miller, I'll go and see the doctor, we can leave after that," Maria said to him.
"I'll go with you," he replied and she nodded.
They left the room together leaving me to my thoughts about my boss.
"What could have happened to Liam Miller?" I asked myself but I couldn't find an answer, maybe he is trying to stop people from asking him about our well-being or our whereabouts, he wouldn't want his reputation tarnished because of two housekeepers.
They came back about thirty minutes after they left and we left the hospital for the mansion in no time.
"Don't worry, I'll take her, you should go and rest," Liam said stopping her from taking me to the room.
"You don't n..."
"Maria, you should rest," he said cutting her short.
Maria looked at me then she nodded, she gave him my bag and she went to the room that was prepared for her, I almost ran after her because I didn't want to be alone with Liam Miller, whether I admit it or not I have strange reactions to him, sometimes l want to hurl insults at him and other times I want to do things an employee shouldn't think of doing with her boss.
"The room is this way," he said and I nodded, he led me to the room and helped me to bed.
"Does it still hurt?" He asked surprising me, it took me a full minute before I could reply.
"Not really," I said staring at the now bandaged wound.
"Good, I'll tell Matilda to get you something to eat," he said turning to leave.
"Why?" I asked before I could stop myself.
"Why what?" He asked turning back to look at me.
"You are being so nice to me, you've never been this nice to me," I replied still staring at the bandaged wound.
"Do you know what kind of harm would be done to my reputation if the media finds out about this?" He asked confirming the thought I had earlier.
"Oh!" I exclaimed somewhat disappointed which is strange, what was I expecting?
"If that answers your question, then may I ask you one question Miss Capable?" He asked making me look at him.
"Yes"
"Why? Why are you here in New York City Laura Davis?" He asked and I stopped breathing Immediately, it felt like I was caught doing something bad.
"Laura breath!" He said and I did as he offered.
"I'll like to rest," I said lying properly and pulling the cover above my head.
It took about three minutes before he decided to leave the room, I waited till he closed the door behind him before pulling the cover down.
Different thoughts started running through my mind, my head started aching too.
"Why would he ask me that?" I asked myself but the answers I was able to come up with were not reasonable ones.
I decided not to leave the room to avoid having to face Liam Miller or answering his question, I had lunch and dinner in the room, Maria came to check on me late in the evening, and we chatted about random things before she went back to her room.
I fell asleep thinking about how to face the next day.
"Wake up!" I heard someone say shaking me.
"Leave me alone, I've barely slept for an hour," I said kicking the person's hand off me gently.
"Laura wake up it is almost noon," the person said making me sit up immediately, I opened my eyes to see Matilda standing beside the bed.
"Almost noon?" I asked and she nodded.
"I feel like I slept for only an hour,"
"Well, you can rest later we need all hands on deck at the moment,"
"What'd going on?"
"Liam Miller's family is coming to the mansion,"
"What?"
"Yes, please can you assist Maria in the kitchen while I clean up the house," she said and I nodded.
I got out of bed and I had a quick bath, I dressed up and then joined Maria in the kitchen.
"Good morning Maria," I greeted as I entered the kitchen.
"Good morning, how are you feeling?"
"I feel better than yesterday, what can I help you with?"
"Are you strong enough to help me? I don't think you should be here, go back and rest," she said waving me off.
"I'm fine Maria, tell me what I can do to help,"
"I really would prefer you resting to you being here, but you are being stubborn so just pass me things I need," she said and I nodded.
I assisted her for about an hour before Matilda came into the kitchen to inform us that they'd arrived and Liam Miller's best friend was with them.
"Where are they?" Maria asked handing me a serving tray.
"Great, go and double check if everywhere is clean Matilda,"
"Okay," Matilda replied leaving both of us in the kitchen.
Maria filled four glass cups with cold water and then placed them on the serving tray.
"Take this to them and ask if they are ready to have lunch, ask them which drink they would prefer," she said and I nodded.
I carried the tray to the sitting room, prepared to give Liam Miller's family a warm welcome when I saw her, the lady that helped me when I was trying to get away from Jack, her eyes met mine and they widened in recognition, I was so shocked that I tripped and crashed with the tray.
