I blinked, taken aback by the admission. “See me?” The words left my mouth before I could stop them.
“Yes,” he said, his voice steady and sure. “I wanted to see how you’ve been holding up.”
I felt a laugh bubbling up in my chest, but it came out more bitter than I intended. “You expect me to believe that? You’ve never cared about how I’m holding up, Damien.”
“I care more than you think,” he said, and the sudden seriousness in his voice threw me off balance.
“Why now?” I asked, my voice quieter, almost resigned. “But wait.” I held up my hand. “Don't even bother trying to explain this one away. I know exactly what this is about. You want to gloat—tell me that all of this was a social experiment and you wanted to get into the genius's pants, see how she'd react? See how she'll take it?”
