"How could I not have something to believe in?" she replied lightly.
"I couldn't tell, Professor Reed."
"Sometimes, it's important to have something to hold onto. Otherwise, it's hard to keep going down a road that seems endless. If life gives us gifts like talent, it's because we're meant to do something meaningful with it."
The two of them chatted easily, without tension or the usual awkwardness. It was hard to believe that after being married for this long, this was the first time they felt such a smooth, open connection.
There were no forced conversations, no stiffness. It felt more like two old friends who had been reunited after years apart, casually reminiscing about their past.
The IV drip took over an hour, and she received other vaccines too. Once that was done, the nurse removed the needle and brought the medications. The rain was coming down in sheets, and the wind was biting cold.
Owen's phone buzzed again.
He took it out and glanced at the screen, frowning.
