Chapter 4
I didn't exactly have a happy backstory, and I didn't sign up to become a hooker because I liked the career trajectory. But misery loved company, and while my story would have earned millions at the box office if it were ever adapted into a classic tearjerker, it was common in my industry.
It was one of the reasons self-pity was not my selling point. After all, there were people worse off than me, and I was just one of the many unfortunate souls who had been dealt a bad card by fate.
I looked away from my mother as more passers-by meandered by. I hurried to meet Evan in the middle and threw my arms around him to show how much I'd missed him.
He wrapped an arm around me. His features were soft as he mused indifferently, "That happy to see me, huh?"
I nodded firmly. "Very much so."
