Emelie's words threw William off. He had never thought that way. He never once had those thoughts crossed his mind. He couldn't tell if Emelie genuinely saw him like that or if she was just venting.
"I would never want you to suffer. I didn't give it much thought. I just knew I had to do it for you…" he explained, panic in his voice.
Where could he even begin to explain? What could he say to ease her anger?
William clasped Emelie's cold hands, pressing them against his warm forehead.
"You wanted revenge on your own, and didn't let Wesley help you. Of course, you wouldn't have let me either. That's why I had to act from behind the scenes. That's all I was trying to do," he said in a hoarse voice.
It wasn't about earning moral credit or playing the martyr.
"I'm worse than Charles, Bryan, or even Beathan. I treated you terribly, and I deserved to be the target of your anger," he said.
He deserved every bit of it.
