It was only at this moment that Emelie looked directly at William, saying, "This was just fulfilling our bet. Everyone here, including yourself, Mr. Middleton, are all my witnesses.
"I'm simply executing the outcome of that wager. Do you find fault with my actions, Mr. Middleton? Where did I go wrong?"
Emelie's usually calm demeanor vanished. Now, bristling with defensiveness, she resembled a hedgehog with its spines all prickled up.
This sudden transformation left William feeling like he was looking at a stranger.
"She accused and tried to frame me. It's conceivable she was the one who tampered with the rope to set me up. Without solid proof, based solely on her accusations and your biased defense, Mr. Middleton, I would've been vilified, perhaps even accused of committing suicide out of guilt. Why should I tolerate such unfairness? And why shouldn't I seek justice?"
