Chapter 49 The Human Heart
While backing up, I said, “You can stay in Las Georgia for a few more days and get used to it. Help me find a house while you’re at it. Curtis gave me another project that’s a little tough, so I might not be able to leave for the time being.”
Emily cussed and said unpleasantly, “Why are you picking up a project when you’re already planning to leave? If you want to leave, then leave. Don’t hesitate.”
I did not know how to leave. The human heart was not that simple.
“Bang!” I had just backed out of the parking space when I suddenly hit something. My heart thumped, and I said through the phone, “Emily, I think I hit something. I’m hanging up now. I’ll call you back later.”
Then, without waiting for Emily to speak, I hung up and opened the door to check outside.
There was nothing in the basement except small animals. I hoped I did not hurt one too seriously.
