"I'm sorry." I respectfully apologized again.
I was sorry for delaying Zane and making her wait for him. I was sorry for my previous attitude towards her. She was such a kind-hearted old lady, and yet I had mocked her.
I really crossed the line! I scolded myself silently, feeling increasingly guilty.
Just as I was overwhelmed with self-reproach, Nancy suddenly pulled me down to sit beside her.
She smiled kindly at me. "Oh, my silly granddaughter-in-law, why are you apologizing? A man should wait for his wife."
I stared at her, confused. What was going on? Did Nancy not know that Zane and I were divorced? Given the way she was acting, she didn't seem to dislike me. What was going on?
Nancy gently patted my hand and looked at Zane. "Well, since you were late because you were waiting for your wife, I'll forgive you."
Zane smiled. "Thank you, Grandma."
He paused, then added, "You've always wanted to meet her, so I brought her with me."
