Callum nodded.
Nathaniel released the boy's ear and gently patted his head.
"Callum, do you want Mommy and me to separate?"
Callum shook his head.
No way!
He had envied other kids whose parents attended school events together and dreamed of holding both his parents' hands at the same time.
"Good boy. To make sure we don't get a divorce, I have to make some sacrifices. Can you understand that?"
Callum pondered for a moment, piecing together Nathaniel's logic.
"So, you're pretending to be hurt to keep Mommy around and avoid divorce? And you think that makes it okay?"
"Yes," Nathaniel replied, raising an eyebrow.
However, Callum's face grew serious as he countered, "But Mommy doesn't seem to want anything to do with you. Is this really going to work?"
That comment hit a nerve.
Callum added, "Besides, Grandma Mildred says pretending to be sick isn't good behavior, and you said it's lying too. Wouldn't Mommy be even angrier if she found out?"
