Chapter 50 : Personal invitation

“Leaving,” I repeat with incredulity growing in my chest like a bad case of molds. “You’re leaving. After approving all of the things that are in place right now? After being directly involved in this tracker thing?”
“Yes,” Jonathan fires back, and when our eyes meet, I see something in his gaze that I don’t think I have ever seen before, in all our years as great friends.
There’s a certain desperation on his face, the kind that seems to stem from an inner conflict that I don’t know about. His eyes are screaming for help. Something about the way he’s all tensed up and quiet makes me believe that he wants to reach out, that he’s been wanting to reach out, but something is stopping him.
I force my anger away, just to give him enough breathing room to tell me what’s going on. I back away from him, and he exhales sharply. He turns to me, and I can see so many emotions flashing on his face. Regret, anger, apology, and despair.
