Ms. Jefferson looked at me, her expression a mix of surprise and intrigue. She had half-hoped that I might choose to stay by her side or come up with some unexpected third option. After all, not many people dared to reject her so directly.
While she enjoyed her games, she could tell genuine people from fakes. However, my choice of money made her think my earlier dignity was just an act.
"Well, well! Ms. Smith was right; nobody can resist money," Ms. Jefferson commented as she laughed loudly, pointing at the table full of bottles. Finish these, and the hundred grand is yours!"
She tossed a card on the table. "PIN is six zeros. Let's see if you have what it takes to earn it!"
I stared at the card, clenching my fist. The money could solve many of my current problems, and while I had my pride, thoughts of Mom's illness stripped away my courage to refuse. Pride and dignity seemed worthless in the face of life and death.
