Chapter 4 Heartless Woman
This was the first job she received after graduating. Due to her excellent school results, her teacher had written her a recommendation letter. Moreover, she really needed this high-paying job at Jennings Corp.
However… when Annie went to the HR Department, the HR Department head unceremoniously threw a file at her face.
“Annie Lane, how could you mess up such a simple calculation? If it weren't for Indy noticing it in time, do you know how much the company would have lost?”
Faced with the sudden crisis, Annie kept her composure. She coolly glanced at the file that had fallen to the floor. She could memorize every single number on it. That was the data she had spent three days and three nights to compile—there absolutely could not have been any mistakes!
“I’ve checked through this data three times. There definitely shouldn’t be any problems!”
Even if she already knew the result, Annie still gave it a go. She did not believe the renowned Jennings Group would sink so low as to use dirty tactics to bully employees.
“This matter was personally verified by the department head. The Head of HR is only following the procedures. Annie, since you’ve made a mistake, just admit it so the department head doesn’t have to mark this down on your personnel file. Otherwise, you won’t be able to enter this industry again after you leave Jennings Corp.”
Angel, who had been standing by the side to enjoy the show, sneered as she spoke. Her gaze was mocking and calculating.
Staring at the faces that just wanted to watch a show and see her leave, Annie only felt disgusted! This was a conspiracy that had been planned from the start, just waiting for today for her to take the bait!
Angel was also an intern this year, but Jennings Corp. only had one vacancy, so between Annie and Angel, only one of them could stay.
Reasonably speaking, Amy had already informed Annie she would be an official employee yesterday. So why was there still a need for Angel at Jennings Corp.? However, for her to appear here today, even representing the Accounting Department, that clearly showed that Annie had been abandoned by her department, and Angel was taking her place.
No one but Sophie could be the one pulling the strings behind the scenes! Lane Corp. and Jennings Corp. had a collaborative relationship. When Annie first entered the company as an intern, she had been asked why there was only a mother on her relatives’ column. She had gritted her teeth and said her father had already passed away, so nobody knew she was the daughter of the wealthy businessman James Lane. Plainly speaking, she was someone with no background, and it was too easy to step over her.
Now, everything was clear. There was no silver line no matter how many wrongs Annie had suffered. She was just a mouse sharing a nest with a snake. Did she have to cause a whole whirlwind of trouble before she relented?
“I didn’t think the lofty Jennings Group would have such dirty schemes happening in the dark. A company like this isn’t worth me staying either.”
Annie took a deep breath, glaring earnestly at the HR head, then calmly turned and left.
She had thought she would be exceptionally enraged, but she was not. Perhaps it was because she was used to Sophie’s bullying and had already developed an immunity, or perhaps it was because Mason’s betrayal had hurt her even more, so she was desensitized to the pain now.
She did not even have the qualification to say she was James Lane’s daughter. What did she have to fight Sophie with?
She only felt a little despair. She already lost her lover, and now she was going to lose her job too.
As Annie walked with her head hung low, she did not notice the surroundings suddenly falling silent and that the atmosphere had become especially reverent, as if some significant figure had graced them with their presence.
Myles, who received obsequious gazes every day, had long gotten used to such a scene. His gaze instantly locked onto Annie, who was walking toward him with her head lowered and a dispirited look on her face.
It seemed this woman had really been fired.
“Annie Lane.”
The low voice had the heavy force of an ancient clock. What was mysterious was that the words “Annie Lane” came out of his mouth like they were alive, perking up the disheartened Annie.
She raised her head abruptly, stilling when she noted the man’s dazzling looks. His eyes, glowing like obsidian, flashed with a heroic spirit. His calm eyes were as sharp as an eagle’s. His eyebrows were knitted slightly, fixing his hawkish gaze firmly on the wary Annie.
Annie’s wrist was grabbed by this man, painful enough for her mind to instantly clear up. “What do you want?”
This man looked so familiar, like she had met him somewhere before…
Annie was already in a bad mood, and some strange man had seized her wrist and stopped her from moving, so her tone was particularly confrontational. She also did not notice the uneasy glances her coworkers were giving her. How could she speak that way to Myles Jennings? Damn, she was as good as dead.
They intently watched the scene unfold with this mentality, but what followed made their jaws drop in shock.
With a smile on his lips, Myles moved sideways, taking a step forward to press Annie against the wall. That wicked smile on his handsome face went straight to the heart, and then he spoke in a clear and mesmerizing low voice, “Annie Lane, we were together just yesterday, and you’ve already forgotten me today? You heartless woman.”
Myles’s words completely stupefied Annie. She gaped at his suddenly magnified face, and this familiar kabedon scenario…
Was he that person from yesterday?! This was a case of enemies being bound to meet on a narrow path. Thinking of the slap she had given him yesterday, Annie’s face paled a few shades, and sweat beaded on her forehead. Was he here for revenge?
As Annie began panicking, the company employees present were already ready to worship her. She had been together with Myles Jennings?! This was even hotter news than if Mars crashed into Earth!
This was Myles Jennings, the dream man of every female employee in the Jennings Group. There were so many people in City A who desired him, but there had never been a single relationship-related rumor about him. Many even privately suspected whether it had something to do with his sexual orientation.
Now, however, he had actually come out to admit he had been with a fired intern?!
