Chapter 23 She’s My Wife
“You all can head down first.”
Without waiting for Annie to answer, Myles waved all the maids who were on standby out the dining hall, though this evidently did not include Kathy.
However, being the only one left in the hall, Kathy’s astonishment had grown quite a bit. Could it be that Myles had made the others leave because he was afraid that Ms. Lane would be uncomfortable?
What position did Ms. Lane hold in Myles’ heart then? Why would she have such a large influence?
Even the previous Ms. Rowan… It seemed as if Myles had never treated her that gently before.
Feeling the stress from being watched fading abruptly, Annie released a long breath of relief. Her eyes also lit up at the sight of the delicious-looking breakfast in front of her.
Throughout all of this, she did not look at Myles even once, but wore a very satisfied smile on her face. To a certain man, this smile was particularly comforting.
“Mr. Jennings… Should Ms. Lane’s luggage be placed in the guest room?”
Standing to one side, Kathy asked inquisitively. Although her voice was soft, asking this in front of Annie herself carried some level of disrespect. Perhaps subconsciously, she assumed that Annie was not a suitable partner for Myles.
Not understanding the deeper meaning behind Kathy’s words, Annie did not feel much of anything and simply focused her breakfast. In fact, she felt some anticipation, as she hoped Myles would agree to the suggestion.
Last night’s passion was ….just a bit too much for her
However, the quick-minded Myles reacted to Kathy’s words instantly. He slowly put down the newspaper in his hands. Although his movements were soft and slow, his expression was exceptionally stern.
First, he squinted his eyes and flicked a glance at Annie, who was eating with relish. Although his eyebrows were raised, his gaze held some malevolence as he turned his sight to Kathy.
“Kate, I was cared for by you ever since I was little. You understand my personality.”
Myles’ voice was low and powerful, and his expression was very calm, but Kathy, who understood him, knew that he was in a bad mood.
“Yes, Mr. Jennings.”
It was exactly because she knew him that she felt astonished, and that was why she wanted to defend Myles as she felt the matching was an injustice.
How could a plain-looking person such as Annie be a good match for him?
“In the future, Annie will be the mistress of this house, so where do you think she should stay?”
Seeing Kathy’s heavy expression, Myles gave an impatient sigh. In this house, Kathy and Hugh were the people he trusted the most. They could even be considered his family, and he was protective of their faults, so he could not actually be angry at Kathy.
However, Myles’ tone was serious. He announced Annie’s identity very earnestly, indicating that Kathy should respect her in the future.
“Mistress?!”
Kathy was shocked. As far as she knew, Myles did indeed treat Annie a little more special, but how could that explain this?
Perhaps, in the modern society where people sated their curiosity with a fast-food concept of dating, Myles was simply sick of fine dining and wanted to try out the taste of simple dishes?
However, he actually announced that Annie was this house’s mistress?!
The greatest privilege that the previous Ms. Rowan had was only being able to freely enter and exit this house!
“I…”
Annie, who was also shocked, frantically lifted her head and looked at Myles with a flickering gaze.
This was too grand of a status, surely?
They were now husband and wife in a legal sense, but… Annie was still thoroughly unable to accept this identity.
“What? Did you forget that we’ve already gotten our marriage license, wife?”
Myles smirked as he looked at the flustered Annie. At the same time, he leaned forward and hooked his long fingers under Annie’s chin. Her tender and moist red lips were like a tasty slice of cake, tempting and inviting.
His mischievous eyes and that softly spoken “wife” made Annie fall completely into enemy hands. Her head was so dizzy that she could not think anymore.
Wife… Annie felt that as long as she heard that word, her whole body would tremble involuntarily, and her heart would become painfully nervous.
“I…”
As Annie became so jumpy she could barely string words together, Kathy watched the scene unfold with her face pale.
Myles and Annie had gone so far as to get their marriage license?!
What kind of national joke was this? By all means, this was more horrifying than if Mars crashed into Earth.
“Mr. Jennings, you two are… married? This… Does your family know about this matter?”
Kathy was completely dumbstruck. She had watched Myles grow up. Her affection for Myles could be described as profound, and she was unable to accept this reality.
Furthermore, his partner in this marriage was Annie Lane, a girl who looked far too common.
“They know.”
This simple reply made Kathy completely speechless, and she was unable to voice the feelings she had in her heart at that moment.
Reluctance, indignance, and disappointment were among the whirlpool of emotions she was experiencing. Such an important thing, yet Myles had only just informed her…
“I understand, Mr. Jennings. Congratulations.”
Despite her pale face, Kathy smiled. She was fifteen years older than Myles. She arrived at the Jennings family when she was eighteen years old, and she was responsible for the care of Myles.
When Myles moved out of the old Jennings house, she followed along and became his housekeeper, taking charge of all tasks big and small in the Jennings house.
In her eyes, Myles was not just her boss, but he was also her family. She had never married because she did not want to leave Myles, but now…
