What happened next was a blur of motion and violence. Logan shifted partially, his claws and fangs extending as he engaged the guards. Laura found herself facing off against Vladislav himself, the vampire lord's eyes blazing with fury.
In the chaos, Laura felt the amulet grow warm against her skin. Instinctively, she grasped it, feeling a surge of power flow through her. With strength she didn't know she possessed, she managed to fight off Vladislav long enough for her and Logan to make their escape.
They fled into the night, pursued by vampire guards. It was only through Logan's intimate knowledge of the surrounding forest and Laura's newfound abilities that they managed to lose their pursuers.
As dawn broke, they found themselves huddled in a small cave, both panting and trying to process what had just happened.
"We can't go back," Logan said grimly. "Vladislav will never forgive this perceived betrayal."
