"Hey, I'm your husband too," Conor playfully teased, obviously enjoying getting under her skin.
Stacey's mood dropped like a stone. She put down her chopsticks, looking upset.
Her appetite disappeared.
Ethan asked, "Why can't mommy go to school? School's cool. Keeping her away from it is like dissing her. If you love her, let her live like everyone else."
"True that," Madam Burton backed Ethan, nodding like what he said was the gospel truth.
Conor quietly rolled his eyes, feeling ganged up on.
He felt like he was the bad guy they were all trying to take down.
"So, you really want to hit the books?" Conor's gaze on Stacey was intense.
Don't think he was clueless.
Using "school" as an excuse was Stacey's ticket out of the Burton family.
Otherwise, she'd be stuck, depending on Ethan to cover for her.
But the school could change everything.
She could find more ways to leave school.
