Chapter 39: After the beast

"Are you going out on the 21st again simply because he's bad for you?" Ariel asked me again.
"At this point, I think I'm fine," I responded. "But we're still far from the 21st. It was barely two nights ago." I took a seat after returning from my morning herb hunt.
"Don't overdo it, Talia. You're pregnant, remember? Unless, of course, you would like to hasten the death of the baby."
"Why would I want to do that?" I shot back at Ariel.
"I'm sure you wouldn't, but gravity might at the rate you're jumping around searching for herbs for me. You might as well turn into a forest while you're at it," she remarked, making me roll my eyes.
"How many more species or races are out there?" I asked, looking out the window.
"More than you could think of. Much more than your pack gives credit to," she replied.
For the rest of the day, I spent most of my time looking out the window and thinking about my brother. Perhaps he prayed for me, which was why I survived, because I had no other e
