Lucia didn’t know much, but what she did know was certain: a curse had passed through Baron. His body was strong enough to handle it, and he had dispelled the curse naturally. She walked over to him and placed a hand on his chest, scanning his entire body with her magical senses, even probing the threads of his soul. Eventually, she found nothing—no trace of the purple mist, no remnants of the poison and curses that Elias had cast on him. She pulled her hand back and stepped away.
“Strange,” she said.
Baron raised an eyebrow, then shook his head. “What did you find?”
“You jump to very simple conclusions,” she replied, a hint of amusement in her voice. He was smart—no, wise was the word. She meant no harm, and he sensed that she was on his side. She found herself liking him more when she thought about their recent trade and how desperately she needed it in her life at that moment.
“The curse he placed on you,” she continued, “I do not sense it.”
