Every morning after that prophecy, I woke up with my hand on my belly, scared that perhaps I had passed my son during the night. Impossible, yes, I know, but I couldn't help it. Picking up the basket and leaving the cottage was like clockwork.
Rising up at the crack of dawn was simply not so difficult anymore, especially when all the hope in life had seemingly gone, and I was left to travel the earth by myself.
No mate, no child. Ariel's words echoed in my head, haunting me with their inevitability: "Your child will die before his first moon, and you will be chased by red moons." The shock of her prophecy left me dazed and disconnected from the world around me.
