The cold of the cell had seeped into my bones long ago, but I’d gotten used to it. My body shivered involuntarily, though not from the cold. It was the anticipation—the dread of what was coming. Darius.
I knew his steps, the way they echoed through the dark, damp halls of the prison. The way his boots scuffed the ground right before he reached my cell. He was coming again.
I had to stop practicing. It felt like a complete waste of time coming back inside and dreading the inevitable torture, the pain—everything. All I wanted right now was sleep, as it had been on my mind since I arrived in the snows. I gritted my teeth and squeezed my hand. But, of course, I wasn’t going to let him win.
