The sound of heavy footsteps echoed through the hall as the Alpha, Amalia’s mate, entered the room. His return was marked by an apparent effort to make his presence felt. He stomped heavily on the floor, his shoulders squared and his face contorted into a scowl, as if he were trying too hard to look imposing. He eyed Avario with a mix of curiosity and suspicion, his lips curling into a thin line.
“So,” the young Alpha said, his voice cutting through the air. “You’re starting to get your memory back, aren’t you?”
Avario met his gaze evenly. “Some of it, yes. But not much.”
The Alpha’s eyes narrowed as he crossed his arms over his broad chest. “You think I don’t see it, do you?” he asked accusingly. “I can see it. I can smell it, and if I could taste it, I would. You’ve lost me.”
Avario frowned. “What are you talking about?”
