“What do you mean?” questioned the messenger. “I went through the witches’ pass—”
“I mean,” the messenger stuttered, “I went through the witches’ pass.” He shook his head. “I mean the river crossing. It appears that Baron’s soldiers are already near,” he said. “But there is a cloud. It’s black, it’s thick, and it smells like nothing but death. Poison.”
“Lady Clara,” he said beside him, “that’s the only other way. They have poisoned the air,” she said.
Frederick gestured for the messenger to continue. “Continue,” he told him.
“Thank you, Alpha,” the young man said. “What else can you tell us?”
“They’re going to come to this side, and we can’t go over there. I fear that if we try to reach them via phone, they will know,” he said.
“Then we’ll have to do it the old way,” Frederick said, having a bright idea. “How?”
