Baron stood at the edge of the Karadun tribe’s encampment, the vast expanse of the desert stretching out before him.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Gabriel asked beside him.
“Everything is ugly because she rejected me,” Baron replied, shoving his hands in his pockets. “But I suppose when you look at it like that, it’s fine.”
“I’m sorry to hear about that,” Gabriel said. “She had a good reason.”
“To buy it?” Baron shook his head. “There’s no good reason for that. Is there a good reason for feelings, though? Would you rather be alone simply because you cannot hope?”
“I don’t believe her.”
“So, do you think she’s lying?” Gabriel asked, mirroring his movements by placing his hands in his pockets.
“Maybe. Maybe not. She does believe that she has been cursed. Cursed by Baron after the poison. I don’t know what poison it could be, but I know it was very bad—it killed her child and kept her bedridden for days.”
