Eleanor stood before Olivia's door, the weight of years pressing heavily upon her. The hallway's dim light cast elongated shadows, reflecting the chasm that had grown between family members over time. Taking a deep breath, she raised her hand and knocked gently.
From inside, a muffled voice responded, "Who's there?"
"It's your grandma, dear," Eleanor replied, attempting to keep her voice steady.
A brief pause ensued, followed by the soft creak of the door opening. Olivia's eyes met Eleanor's, curiosity mingled with apprehension evident in her gaze.
"Olivia dear, were you about to sleep?" Eleanor inquired, noting the scattered papers and ledgers on the desk behind her granddaughter.
Olivia glanced back at her workspace. "No, not yet. I have a bank book to work on." She hesitated, the corners of her mouth tightening. "But... is there something you wanted to discuss? It's quite late."
